A Prize for Perseverance
Offered by David Apollo

When I grew up, much was made at school of the fact that Thomas Edison was a prolific, energetic inventor. His quotes seemed all oriented to advocating Perseverance among all things. He was much more, and seen both positively and negatively by historians, but the narrative of his Perseverance continues.

Among his quotes:
  • Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

  • I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

  • Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.

  • There's a way to do it better - find it.

  • Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits.

  • ... and more!!!
Well, it turns out that the superior replacement for Edison's incandescent light bulb required the same degree of Perseverence. And, similarly, since its energy requirements are so much lower, it too will be transformational globally.

The original Wall Street Journal article, published on 07 October 2014, can be found here.

It details the work of three Japanese-born scientists (Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura, from left to right) who have been awarded the Nobel Prize for the invention of the blue light-emitting diode. Once the blue diode was invented, the way was paved for the invention of LED bulbs that emit white light, and they are now becoming ubiquitous.

The article is a good read.

Champion Liberty! ... and the innovation it spawns.
