Ask the Universe for It
Offered by David Apollo

Jim Carrey was asked to give a Commencement Address to the Maharishi University of Management's class of 2014.

He spoke seriously for more than 20 minutes from the heart, referring to his life's experiences. Of course, his genius for speaking naturally took him to comedy now and then. Yet, all relevant.

While ConserveLiberty takes a position on Spirituality, it does not take a position on specific religions. We all have a sense of our own spiritual nature apart from any religion we may feel aligned with or a member of. Jim Carrey's spirituality was overtly evident during his speech, and evident in such a way that many of us might find synchrony with.

I regard this as a timeless speech - one worth listening to if you have the time and interest.

Among the more powerful points made:
  • "Fear will be a player in your life - you get to decide how much."
  • "You can ask The Universe for it."
  • "You can fail at what you don't want, so you might as well take a chance at doing what you love."
  • "The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is. Everything you gain in life will rot and fall apart, and all that will be left of you is what was in your heart."
  • "Like many of you I was concerned about going out in the world and doing something bigger than myself, until someone smarter than myself made me realize that there is nothing bigger than myself."
  • "My soul is not contained within the limits of my body. My body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul."
  • "How tricky is this ego that it would tempt us with a promise of something we already possess?"
  • "It's about letting the Universe know what you want, and working toward it, while letting go of how it comes to pass."
  • "When I say, 'Life doesn't happen to you, it happens for you,' I really don't know if that's true. I am just making a conscious choice to perceive challenges as something beneficial so that I can deal with them in the most productive way."
Afterwards, he made a second shorter speech as he accepted an honorary degree being given to him by Maharishi University. His persistent perspective on Life, the Universe, and Everything was evident in his comment, "I'd like to thank Consciousness for finding another way to entertain and amuse itself." The importance of this speech regarding the imperative to seize the liberty to be who you are cannot be missed.
